Soft small flowers

I was walking around the garden looking for signs of summer. I found lots of little flowers in bloom so I got out my macro lens and started taking photos. I love this time of year… slowing down and appreciating all the new plant life around me is one of the most relaxing ways to spend the day.

Succulent garden

One of the best things about living in California is the amazing succulents growing all over. I wanted to take some macro photos of some super small succulents so I went to one of my favorite local gardens. This cobweb sempervirens is about the size of my thumb and grows in large clusters. The cobweb on the outside of this succulent is interesting I have never seen anything like it.

This succulent is a Senecio ‘Kilimanjaro’ and makes a wonderful house plant. I love the soft silver-gray green color of the leaves of this succulent.

Aeonium is a genus of about 35 species of succulents that are my all time favorites. I love the bright green and red outline of this small tree houseleek succulent.

Crassula capitella is native to southern Africa and grows extremely well in southern California. This is one of the most wild shaped succulents I have ever seen with its propeller-like leaves. I hope you enjoy this group of succulents.

I wanted to create some surreal portraits so I took a hike in the Santa Monica mountains late in the afternoon. At the top of the mountain I felt so close to the moon. I wanted to create a feeling of being pulled away from earth by the gravity of the moon. This was my favorite photo of the day I hope you enjoy it.

I love how this photo turned out. I always feel so small when I’m hiking in the Santa Monica mountains and wanted to show that in this image. We are all so small on this big earth.

I found this animal bone while on a hike a few weeks ago. I think bones are super interesting to photograph. The contrast between the dark earth and ivory bone look beautiful in this photo.

Black and white dry river bed

California is in a huge drought still. I am always looking for dried up river and lake beds to photograph. I love the patterns created by the dry cracking earth. I love the high contrast in the black and white photos. I hope you enjoy this minimalist collection of black and white photography.
