Microscopy

Microscopy is using microscopes to view samples or object that are otherwise unseen by the human eye. This is my favorite type of scientific photography. I could spend all day in a lab creating different microscopic slides and photographing the unseen microscopic world. I use the technique of polarizing light to increases contrast and bring out the color variations in each specimen. The most common way to increase contrast is to stain the different structures with selective dyes this can create artificial colors. I hope you enjoy this collection of colorful abstract microscopy photography.

Native California flowers and succulents

The shape of the Calla lily flower is curvy and feminine. I wanted to show off it’s natural beauty against a simple elegant background.

The purple stamens are the heart beat of the iris flower. The white, yellow and bright purple make this flower stand out in the garden.

Fog bow on the beach

It was super foggy last week on the California coast. That didn’t stop the surfers from catching 10 foot waves. You can see a silhouette of the surfer on the horizon.

The fishing pier was barely visible though the thick fog.

As the fog started to clear an amazing phenomenon called a fog bow appeared. Some people call this a white rainbow because of the lack of color.

It was exciting to see this fog bow for the first time. Some fob bows like this one have pale colored rings of red, blue and green.

White and green flowers

In an area that is dominated by birds of paradise, I found this calla lily. It stands out with it’s bright white and swooping pedal which look incredibly inviting to anyone, especially the buzzing bee I found inside when I went for a closer look. As the bee buzzed away I realized this flower stands out against the palm trees behind it, which to say
the least is a pretty hard feat.

There’s something exciting about seeing a flower that hasn’t bloomed yet, you almost feel like waiting all day to see it open slowly and reveal the beauty inside. However, the beauty in this flower was what’s on the outside because our imaginations leave us wondering what’s on the inside.

As you can see when iris flower blooms, it grabs your attention immediately with it’s purple pedals that seem to be dancing ever so slightly. While the purple pedals caught my eye, I couldn’t ignore the bed of pedals under it which looks comfortably supportive.

It was a nice surprise to find calla lily under a staircase because I feel it deserves to be the center of attention. It has this beautiful natural gradient of light green to bright white in which the pedal swoops at the tip. It was hard to see from above but upon closer inspection I found this to be the most interesting flower of the day.

California rain storm

California is in a serious drought. Last week we finally got some rain! I had to go outside and enjoy the rainfall. I took this group of photos on February 28th in the late afternoon. I was lucky a break in the rain created this beautiful rainbow over the fishing pier.

As the rain storm cleared I got some amazing photos of the big white clouds in the sky. This storm was not a drought-buster but it did help. Southern California is still at about half its normal rainfall for the season.

Off in the distance you could see it was still raining over the ocean. Anacapa island is not visible it’s raining so hard over the island.

I’m so happy that we got this rain storm. The pacific coast needs a lot more rain this season hopefully we get another storm like this soon.
